Starting in 600 B.C., Greek politicians called the land within the empire of King Cyrus The Great, “Persis.” This name was derived from the word “Pars," which was the name of the people over whom Cyrus The Great ruled. In spite of some resistance from the inhabitants of the country, “Persia” formally renamed itself “Iran” in 1935. When this change took place, all Persians were to consider themselves Iranians and to incorporate the terms “Iran” and “Iranian,” into their common and official speech and documents. But many Persians were against it, and they still celebrated Nowruz (the Persian/Zoroastrian new year) as a Persian celebration and not as an Iranian celebration. It is still celebrated by Iranians, including the Muslims. A great irony is that the clearly Zoroastrian new year celebration, Nowruz, was and is widely celebrated by the Muslims in Iran, the same Muslims who wiped out the Zoroastrians along with their beliefs hundreds of years ago.
Why it is so important for us to know this history? History has order and meaning. It is the sum of the events that have led to the present time. The past is linked to the present and to the future. If you do not study the past, you will not be able to understand properly the present and the future. You will gain these beneficial insights from studying, as history repeated itself in 1979 when the Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown and the long standing Persian Human Rights Declaration was taken down by force in Iran and replaced by the Quran under New Islamic Revolution, this ended the 2500 years of Persian Monarchy and was the end of Aryamehr Dynasty.
